Cultiv8 Tennis
Cultiv8 – About us
Cultiv8 Tennis provides high-performance coaching services for junior
and full-time tennis players. With
extensive experience of developing players at all stages of the tennis journey
CV8 understands the holistic nature of player development and the importance of
developing the person as well as the player.
The CV8 mission at Queens is to develop a transparent development
pathway to increase opportunities and standards within the Club. We recognise that players (junior and adults) have different
motivations for playing the game and we want to be able to understand these and
deliver appropriate provision for all club members. It is imperative that a
pathway is made explicit so everyone has the opportunity for progression and
enjoyment.

Level 3
I have been tennis coaching for over 18 years gaining experience across various sports including football, tennis and Strength & conditioning. As a tennis player I started playing tennis when I was 16 years old and very quickly fell in love with the sport working my way up through local, county and national league level.
I competed for 3 years in the university divisions at national level gaining experience playing some of the best players in the country. I started coaching at my local club
and quickly gained experience through working with local schools and developing great relationships with senior coaches in order to develop my skills further.
While at university I studied sports coach witch helped me gain a greater understanding of coaching across many age groups and abilities and different sports. Over the years I
have learned that my passion lies in working closely with juniors and adults
and helping them reach there potential and develop a love for tennis.
Since coaching at Queens Sports club I have developed a great relationship with players and parents and feel like that my skill set is something that compliments the club.

Level 4
Simon played tennis at a high standard as a junior and at senior level for over 35 years. He started playing at Huddersfield as a junior and played Yorkshire league for the club.
He joined Queens Coaching team in 1997, joining Steve Mcloughlins coaching team. He has 30 years of coaching experience at all levels, from the Advanced player to social/club player.
Simon has produced a number of good players over the years from the junior program at Queens who
have gone on to play at a high level, one being Andy Banks who played Davis Cup for Great Britain. Simon has more become a expert in delivering Cardio Tennis.

Level 3
As a player, I played at regional, national and then international level, gaining experience at a variety of academies across Europe and America giving a broad base of experience as a player that I can now draw on as a coach. Based out in Spain as a junior for several years, I played around Europe as well as competing in the Orange Bowl and the American cup. I
took some time away from tennis throughout University completing a Sport Psychology degree, again which I believe goes hand in hand in facilitating my approach as a coach.
My journey as a player combined with my studies at University has allowed me to come back into tennis seeing the game with a whole new perspective and a greater overall understanding of player development.
In my relatively short coaching career so far I have worked at a number of smaller clubs as a Head Coach. I have taken on responsibilities for managing and delivering programmes at the venues and worked with a range of junior and adult players of all abilities. I have also been assistant coach in my home county of Lancashire for the Under 10 team who finished 2nd Nationally at County Cup. I took up a coaching position with Cultiv8 in June 2021 and have been working with their senior coaches to extend
my experiences and further develop my coaching skills. I enjoy working with players at all stages of the pathway; mini tennis, juniors and adults and have a passion to help every player achieve their potential whatever that might be. I am really excited to be part of the coaching team at Queens and look forward
to seeing you on court soon!
Edward Appleyard
Level 3
As a player, I started competing around the age of 12 and then first got into the Yorkshire county squad at Under 14 level. Since then I have played in County and National events around the country competing in British Tour events for singles and also
competing in doubles for Yorkshire.
I joined Cultiv8 in 2019 as a player and have since transitioned into being
part of their coaching team. I still enjoy competing and believe this helps me to empathise and better support developing players.
I started my coaching career at David Lloyd in Harrogate where I worked with a wide range of players from Mini Red up to performance players. Then I moved on to Ripon Tennis Centre where I gained more experience working with a wide variety of both junior and adults. Since working at Cultiv8, I have worked with top County and National players
and have also worked as a hitter with various international players. I have
also been the assistant team captain for the girls u12s Yorkshire team and am now the assistant coach for both the u12 and u14 boys Yorkshire teams. I am currently on my Level 3 coaching course, which will completed in early 2023.
I am really excited to be part of the team at Queens, working in both the junior and adult programmes to help raise the standards and increase opportunities for all!
At Cultiv8 we recognise the importance of creating fun and engaging ways for
learning. As part of our mission we are keen to instil a love of physical
activity, health and well-being in children from a young age that lasts a
lifetime. To help us do this we combine our own Cultiv8 Kids Programme with the
new LTA youth Programme to underpin our session content and delivery. In doing
this we are able to deliver a comprehensive and innovative coaching programme
that will help to make tennis more relevant, accessible, welcoming and
enjoyable for more kids. Sessions are fun, dynamic and provide children with a
sense of progression and a clear pathway for development.
This is an introduction to tennis. Here, we help kids improve their balance, agility and co-ordination while teaching
them about the sport we love. At this stage it’s not about winning or losing,
it’s just getting to grips with the basics.
As players progress it will start to look a bit more like the tennis you know. You’ll see overarm serves, rallies and
volleys. Coaches will help children to further develop their co-ordination,
balance and speed. We’ll introduce relaxed competition here too.
Time to throw in some tactics, problem-solving, and guides to sportsmanship and leadership. At this stage
children will know all of the rules and will be serving and returning in
matches.
This is the big one. It’s time for kids to play on full size courts. Now it’s all about growing their game by fine tuning
and refining the techniques they’ve learned so far.
Time to find your game. Playing on a full size court with the same size balls the pros use, kids will continue to explore
different styles on the court, and start to choose their own. Our Yellow ball
sessions are split into the following groups: Beginner, Improver &
Advanced.
These sessions are for players aged 10 and above who are training regularly throughout the week and taking part in
competitions. Players will be invited to join these sessions directly by a
coach. Please do not book on to this session without a prior discussion with
one of our coaching team.
The Cultiv8 coaching programme includes
Adult Beginner Sessions and Improver / Advanced sessions, along with Cardio
Tennis Sessions, Tennis Specific Conditioning and Social Tennis.
These sessions are designed for beginners
and will really help players to learn the basic techniques of tennis and
progress their game to the next level. Each session will build upon the
previous one, enabling players to develop their technique on all shots and
combine these with the tactics to be able to play a match effectively.
This session is aimed at adults who have played tennis before and who have a level of competency across the game but are
still looking to learn, progress and develop. This session will help adults to
get back into tennis if they have previously played but been out of the game for a while, appeal to others who may be looking to develop their technique further or to those who want to just play more and meet new players.
This session is similar to a circuit style training class where players will move round different stations to exercise. The circuit will include tennis specific exercises to help condition
the body to enhance tennis strokes, movement patterns and efficiency. The
session will combine tennis instruction and coaching with a more
fitness-focused approach for those who want to train all aspects of their
‘tennis fitness’ in one session.
Cardio Tennis is a fun, sociable group fitness class with a tennis twist. This tennis workout is open to anyone - all
ages and abilities! Great music, great cardio and great people – what’s not to like? You’ll get to hit lots of tennis balls during your class, build up your skills and work up a sweat. You might be wondering, “is tennis good exercise?”
- the short answer is yes! Tennis offers a great workout from a cardio fitness perspective as well as working out muscles across your body, from your core to your glutes. Each class is an hour long, with a short warm-up, a 40-minute full
body workout, and a cool down.
‘Simply Social’ runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays. These sessions are a great way to meet and mix with different members. A coach will be present for the session and facilitate where needed. The coach will also offer coaching tips and feedback to players to aid learning and overall game development.
Information to add
These sessions are for ladies only and offer a combination of coaching and match-play opportunities. Players will be able to develop their skills and perfect their technique before having a chance to put these into practice with the coach overseeing their play.
